The short answer

Blackjack is the casino game with the lowest house edge: around 0.5% if you use basic strategy at a table that pays 3 to 2, compared with 2.7% at European roulette or 4% or more on a typical slot. You win if your hand beats the dealer's without going over 21. How to play, in five steps

1. You bet before the cards are dealt, between the table minimum and maximum.
2. You get two cards face up; the dealer gets one face up and one face down.
3. You decide: hit (one more card), stand (keep what you have), double (just one more card for twice the stake) or split (if you have a pair, play it as two hands).
4. The dealer plays: draws until reaching 17 or more, following a fixed rule (at some tables the dealer also hits soft 17).
5. Hands are compared: if yours beats the dealer's without going over 21, you are paid 1 to 1; with a natural blackjack (an ace plus a 10 or picture card) you are paid 3 to 2 at good tables; if you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts afterwards.

Picture cards count as 10, the ace counts as 1 or 11, whichever suits, and a hand with an ace counted as 11 is called "soft".

Basic strategy: the chart

Basic strategy is the mathematically optimal decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer's face-up card. It will not win you every hand, but it minimises the house edge in the long run. A summary version for a multi-deck table where the dealer stands on soft 17:

Two practical rules to memorise before the chart: never take insurance (the insurance bet against a dealer's ace has a house edge of close to 7%) and never split tens.

Bankroll management at blackjack

With a house edge of 0.5%, blackjack is the game where variance matters more than the edge in the short term. Simple rules:

1. Set a session budget in pesos and a base bet of between 1% and 2% of that budget.
2. Do not raise your bet after losing: the martingale does not change the house edge and drains any bankroll.
3. Withdraw your winnings when you reach your session target.
